Nonfarm payrolls represent the number of employees in the United States excluding farm workers and a few other occupational types. This is tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), which conducts payroll surveys with commercial and public enterprises throughout the United States. Monthly, the BLS publishes the nonfarm payroll data in its "Employment Situation" report, which is keenly monitored by the public.
In addition to farm laborers, certain government workers, private families, owners, and non-profit employees are excluded from nonfarm payroll statistics.
